Empowered Women Empowered Me

I have loved sharing with you my journey through both the bad and great times abroad. But I think it’s finally time to write about where my strength comes from.

So here’s to some of the most incredible women in my life as we celebrate the end of Women’s History Month!

There will always be the women who have paved the path for us to be where we are today. Women in politics, science, arts, sports.

But for me, the women closest to me have molded me into the strong and independent young woman I am today.

I would be no where without my lovely mother. It may not seem like I care it at times, but Mom you are the greatest woman I know.

Yes, we get in fights or I get frustrated when I’m asked a million questions. We’ve had our battles with each other, but you still manage to love me.

My mom was the first woman to ever give me unconditional love. She was the first woman I saw in my life work a full time job while still coming home with a smile on her face.

I love you Mom! You have taught me to always work hard. You never complain and I hope to one day be as incredible as you.

Then I turn to my fearless sister. The first of the O’Connell girls to move to another country and teach English.

You showed me bravery. Even when we were young. You were the first to move across the country for university. I followed you because I saw how strong and powerful you were. You inspired me.

And then I have three other sisters to look up to for strength. You women are intelligent, opinionated, funny and selfless.

I’m lucky to be the youngest as I got to model myself off of the greatest traits from you all.

Now as I’ve been fighting my own battles while abroad, I have found other women to turn to that have showed me perseverance.

I couldn’t have done this journey with my best friends by my side. One abroad with me and one worrying about me back in the states.

Meggie, my incredible travel partner. Thank you for standing by my side during my tears and panic attacks. You always show me the fun side of this journey.

And to Alex, thank you for being the best listener. For letting me cry and scream and say the most hateful things because you somehow know it’s just an episode I need to get through. You have patience that is unmatched.

To my new friends along the way, thank you for understanding and relating to me in this difficult transition we accomplished.

Together we were able to support and turn to each other when in need. But most importantly, thanks for creating the happiest of memories.

I am so grateful for all the women in my life. Those who I talk to daily and those who I speak to every once in a while. You all are special.

I would not be empowered to keep fighting, to keep going, if it were not for you all.

Empowered women empower me.

This month is for us. Remember that you are incredible. Remember the future is female!
