The past three weeks of traveling have been nothing short of incredible.
And well, incredibly tiring.
I feel like no one ever mentions how much traveling can take out of you. Or the unplanned setbacks and dangers.
The tiredness leads to strong emotions. And in my case, unintended anger.
But despite all of the baggage that comes with traveling, the experiences are unmatched.
And my favorite part of traveling is the happiness you feel as you pass familiar buildings on your ride home from the airport.
This time I wasn’t heading to my first ever home. Instead I was heading home to Samut Sakhon and the apartments at Sunflower Trilingual School.
That is my home.
I truly am in shock at that feeling of excitement as I was nearing this home after weeks of traveling.
Then I began to think, it doesn’t matter to me the location of my “home.”
Home is where I can make memories, where I can grow and feel comfortable.
And in all places I found home in a country I never thought I would last.
Thailand, you are my current home.
You have watched me change from a once anxious, depressed and weak girl to a woman I never in my wildest dreams could have pictured emerging.
You gave me a support system, all down our apartment hallway. Rooms I could walk into unannounced and feel welcomed. Feel at home.
This is the part of traveling that people tend to leave out.
The home you create for yourself.
Traveling has made this world seem smaller. It taught me how to find a home when it doesn’t seem possible.
Now I know that no matter where I end up next, I will be able to start a new home because it’s not so reliant on location, but rather the feeling.
I’m excited for my last few weeks of traveling and wrapping up my time at my beautiful home here in Thailand.
But I’m more excited to carry this feeling of being at home with me as I enter the next chapter of my life.
Love always,
Lizzy
Hi Liz!
Another great piece. I’ve always felt “home” is wherever I am with people I love.
Can’t wait to see you when you are back in PA. I will treat to drinks and you can tell me all about your adventures. Love you! Mrs. McCabe
